It's so very strange to me that Bush can remove a prison sentence from one of his Vice President's aids and then say it had nothing to do with politics afterwards. He said the penalty was too harsh for someone who had been such a good public servant for so many years. Many people, of course, disagree: Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald disputed the president's assertion that the prison term was excessive. Libby was sentenced under the same laws as other criminals, Fitzgerald said.
"In this case, an experienced federal judge considered extensive argument from the parties and then imposed a sentence consistent with the applicable laws. It is fundamental to the rule of law that all citizens stand before the bar of justice as equals," Fitzgerald said. What strikes me as outrageous is the fact that this is Bush's friend and he removed his prison sentence before he had to actually serve any of it. I'm not bloodthirsty here in the least, I just believe in due process of the law and want the government to function properly. When the president can choose to commute anyone's prison sentences and then does so for his friends, it just reeks. I hate stuff like that as it disgusts me. When I think of how Gandhi would have handled it, he would have told his friend that he broke the law and now he has to suffer the consequences. I wish people had enough fortitude to accept what they've done and accept the responsibility instead of being able to get out of it because they have money or know someone in power. It disturbs me that our country is one where that is possible and happens quite often. Tags: politics
